What is it?
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic components of plants to facilitate healing. The most common extract used for Aromatherapy are pure essential oils which are liquids obtained from plants, that evaporate at room temperature with characteristic aromas.
How does it work?
A human being should be able to recognise between 3,000 to 10,000 different aromas. The area where this is experienced is called the Olfactory system. Within the Olfactory system there are over 1,000,000 sensory receptor cells, as the cells receive different smells they send messages to part of the mid brain (hypothalamus) the body will react accordingly in most cases.
When inhaled, the smell of essential oils can be identified extremely quickly by the cells in the olfactory system. Steam enhances this reaction two fold, as it also carries droplets of essential oil onto the body allowing the skin to absorb these tiny molecules through the pores on the hair shafts. They bind with the lymphatic fluid which carries the oil molecules into the blood stream to the different organs where the oils used are identified.
Their regulating properties swiftly seek areas in the body that need treating. For example Tea Tree will seek out and find infection and fungi. Lavender will find almost everything.
Essential oils can be used when there is no physical pain or malady the variance in smell can be invigorating, relaxing or mood enhancing, romantic or uplifting.
